Let's talk about it
The Exclusive Release
hen we received the word about nearly 21 year American Light Whiskey from River Roots, we knew it was something we were going to need to sample, and it did not disappoint. These bottles dropped for pre-sale on the 4th of July, and sold out in a few minutes. However, with bottling now finished, and more bottles available to drop very shortly, we want to revisit what makes this bottle so special, and why we selected it.
This bottle drops August 2, on BRBNFNDR. Make sure to add "Proof Through The Night" to your bottle filters whitelist and act quick when you see the BRBNFNDR notification!
THE PROOF IS IN THE POUR
'll be honest. I typically do not fan-girl over American Light Whiskey. Don't get me wrong, they're great bottles. But from my personal experience, they all carry an extremely similar profile, from an often 99/1 corn/malted barley mashbill. Why 1% malted barley? The 1% malted barley is essential for enzymatic activity during fermentation. That's it.
Anyway, I find myself consistently preferring, and leaning into, various bourbon mashbills. That's just my palate, right-wrong-or-indifferent. American Light Whiskey is essentially barrel aged moonshine. Distilled and barreled at a generally flavor-stripping, high proof. In my opinion, it often lacks the complexity and nuance that I find enjoyable in most of my all time favorite whiskeys.
That being said, this one hits different. While still made with a standard 99/1 mashbill, something about the age, rickhouse/rick location, and variable climate exposure made these barrels special. Proof Through The Night lacks the ethanol burn of many ALW's and comes with a "darker" flavor profile than many ALW's we have had.
THE NITTY GRITTY
Age: 20 years, 8 months
Mashbill: 99 corn, 1 malted barley
Distillate: Distilled Nov 2004, Indiana
Nose
Sweet oak forward, honey soaked tobacco leaves, caramel praline cookies, and vanilla. Slight hint of pepper
Palate
Not much "light", about this one. Sweet, leather and oak, cherry cola/Dr. Pepper honey, caramel praline cookies, raisins and dark fruits.
Finish
A bit of sweet tobacco leaf, drying oak, caramel and honey carry through the finish. Alongside, is a persisting leather and honey profile, on this nearly 21 year old, Hazmat, American Light Whiskey. The finish is extremely long and pleasant, with notes that mingle and build on each other.
Release: Aug 2
